Hi, I'm trying to install Oracle8i (8.1.6) on Red Hat 7.3.
(It came on a CD with a book, "Oracle8i for Linux Starter Kit".)
After setting up groups, user oracle, environment variables,
everything in the book, I try to run the so-called "Universal"
installer (grumble), and it hangs:

[oracle at localhost oracle]$ cd /mnt/cdrom/
[oracle at localhost cdrom]$ ./runInstaller
[oracle at localhost cdrom]$ Initializing Java Virtual Machine from ../stage/Components/oracle.swd.jre/1.1.8/1/DataFiles/Expanded/linux/bin/jre. Please wait...

At this point, I wait like 10 minutes and nothing happens,
but apparently the jre started:

(I run sawfish. Do you think that is the problem?? Hmm, does sawfish
support "Motif 1.2"?)
My glibc version is 2.2, and Oracle requires linking with 2.1.3,
but I downloaded a patch (stub 2.1.3 bindings), and it says to
just install as normal but don't add a database during the install
and then apply the patch.

Any suggestions?
