Bandwidth isn't the whole story, any more than clock speed is. My
Speakeasy account is technically 1/3 the bandwidth of my MediaOne cable,
but is actually faster. That's because there are fewer hops to the
backbone, and Speakeasy's DNS servers are blindingly fast.
MediaOne/RoadRunner/AT&T's DNS servers would often take seconds to
answer.

traceroute to blu.org (216.235.254.231), 30 hops max, 38 byte packets
 1 gw-081-068.dsl.speakeasy.net (66.92.68.1) 28.556 ms 21.654 ms
16.523 ms
 2 border8.ge3-2.speakeasy-16.bsn.pnap.net (63.251.141.212) 14.483 ms
17.040 ms 15.834 ms
 3 core2.fe0-1-bbnet2.bsn.pnap.net (63.251.128.66) 16.462 ms 17.076 ms
16.500 ms

As you can see, I'm three hops from tbe backbone. With my cablemode, I
had to go through several Mediaone servers before I even got out of their
intranet.
