I installed SuSE 8.0 on my laptop the other day from DVD. My
initial install had some I/O errors on some packages. After some
problems, I decided to perform the installation a second time. The
second installation was successful. Everything came up properly. So
far no glitches with 8.0. After install, I performed an online
update to get all the patches. One issue is that when downloading
the patches it complains that GPG is not installed. BTW: SuSE has
an online update feature that allows you to easily update your
system to the latest patch level. You can select which patches you
want to upgrade (manual update) or just select all (auto update).

In 7.3, the online update appears to have memory and time usage
quadratic in the number of RPM's listed in all of the patches, which
even with 512M and an AMD 1700+ is most unpleasant. Has this been
fixed in 8.0?
