You mean disabling in the BIOS?  I'll have to try that.  I'm not using the 
on-board sound or LAN.  And obviously I'm not using the Serial ATA.

Now you lost me.  I'm looking in the manual right now and it talks of 6 USB2.0 
ports.  In fact, according to 
http://www.asus.com/progspec.asp?m=A7V8X-X&langs=01
yours is the same.

I have a USB-based APC UPS and that is working for me.  I have seen the daemon 
silently die on two occasions in the past few weeks though.  Not that this 
surprised me what with all the other troubles I've had with this box.

Maybe I'll offer to swap with someone for a simpler Socket A board.  Doing the 
math, even if I bought a board with no on-board anything but plenty of slots 
for about $50, then spent another $50 on USB and firewire cards, I would have 
been ahead of the game over this motherboard.

One more thing- did you get sensors working to monitor the temperatures?
