Hi Scott,

So by mentioning FORTRAN/C++/MatLAB, I assume you're interested in
scientific computing?  A topic near & dear to my heart!  ;-)

In any case, MatLAB is an excellent tool for pre- and post-processing
numerical data.  Its pricey (typically $1500 for a "base" package), but
if you enroll at a local college or university you can generally get an
essentially full-featured Student Edition for less than $100.

And there are other good environments for data processing that you might
want to look into:

  - GNU Octave: very nice Free and mostly MatLAB-compatible environment:
      http://www.octave.org/

  - IDL from http://www.rsinc.com/idl/  (NOT free)

  - older but still useful: http://www.gnuplot.info/
