instability on new remote server

I like to setup all my remotely administered boxes with serial console.
Use either a terminal server or another Linux server to connect to the
serial port on the host in question.  Hopefully, you'll get better
answers to your problem.  You can log all the console activity and 
often times see exactly what's failing.
