Linux PCI 802.11b wireless card support (?)

I need to add recent release Linux desktop hardware (redhat {8,9}, etc...)
via PCI bus cards to a small 802.11b wireless net of Windoze machines
and wondered what boards and drivers this diverse community
has had success or problems with (?)
[Like several other members, We have Linksys BEFW11S4 AP w/switch to
 connect to, but don't see a *Linux* Linksys WPM11/PCI current card version
 driver available anywhere yet ?]

Having google'd around a while ... shows some Linux support for older cards
based on (Intersil) Prism2/2.5/3 and (offshoot) Wavelan/Orinoco chipsets;
but fewer manufacturers offering new version cards with these.
There also seems to be considerable confusion as to which Linux
drivers work (best) for any given PCI (or PLX) card ...
[and little vendor ack'd support, besides Cisco ($$) for Linux use !]

So, what have You used (card + driver) to wireless connect desktop Linux
boxes that performs well ? Thanks for any pointers/refs to relevant
info/tips.

Regards,
Rob Taylor
