Inspiron 8000: I upgraded the LCD panel, but it didn't "take"

I upgraded my LCD panel from SXGA+ (1400x1050) to UXGA (1600x1200).
Unfortunately, my laptop is still running at 1400x1050, so the video
wraps over at the bottom right edges of the screen. According to
XFree86, I still have the IBM panel installed rather than the Samsung
UXGA panel:

(II) R128(0): Video RAM override, using 32768 kB instead of 32768 kB
(**) R128(0): VideoRAM: 32768 kByte (128-bit SDR SGRAM 1:1)
(**) R128(0): Using flat panel for display
(**) R128(0): Will try to use DMA for Xv image transfers
(II) R128(0): Panel size: 1400x1050
(II) R128(0): Panel ID: IBM ITSX68E
(II) R128(0): Panel Type: Color, Single, TFT
(II) R128(0): Panel Interface: LVDS
(II) R128(0): PLL parameters: rf=2700 rd=12 min=12000 max=27000; xclk=10500

Any thoughts?
