To expand on Jerry's answer, there are two classifications of KVM switches.  
The passive kind are little more than a big messy switch.  The active kind 
try to emulate the K, V, and M to the unselected computers so they don't 
think their peripherals were yanked out all of a sudden.  Windows *hates* 
that.
