My opinion on this whole 'what distros to support' thing is this.  Each volunteer has experience with a specific distro, or possibly distros.  A volunteer that knows redhat really really well, but doesn't know debian, shouldn't be installing debian.  They likely know more of the tricks to getting redhat installed, as well as what hardware would be supported (debian is still installing off a 2.2.x kernel).

I realize you might the end up with a huge line of people waiting to get redhat installed with only one volunteer, but something could be worked out.  If you've never installed something before its not allways the best to try it with somebody elses computer.

Knoppix is a good 'test' system, but if it works with with knoppix, it might not work with redhat, and it definately might not work with debian's 2.2.x install system.
