Here is an update after some on-line shopping today. USB2.0 at 256MB appears to be my sweet-spot on the capacity/price curve. Two drives grabbed my attention.

I'm learning more toward physical size over ruggedness, fits my lifestyle better. I need to fit this into my laptop bag, not take it jogging. :-)

If you want cheaper there is the Sandisk Cruzer-mini for $37 at ebuyer.com (no shipping or tax), $36 at chiefvalue.com.  If you want ultra-small PQI seems to be the choice, but costs $$.  The Lexar Elite is another alternative for those who like brand-names, $44 includes shipping.

I'm having an almost impossible time finding dimensions...
