Formating an NTFS bootable partition

hi.  i may be missing something, but if your just putting a penguin on
part d it's pretty easy.  i was duel booting with xp (for games only)
and also had redhat.  it was completely painless and all the necessary
tools were there for formatting (it was so idiot proof even i couldn't
screw it up).  now grub asks me which os i want.  does the distro your
going to use not do this?  if you feel you need to reformat now, well
