Laptop recommendations

I am also in the market for one. My Compaq Presario has served me well
in class, at installfests at work, in meetings, but the power connector
is damaged, and the only way to fix it is to replace the mother board. 

I would like one with no OS on it so I don't have to pay $$ to
Microsoft, but ...

BTW: In the past, my Compaq Presarios have worked very well. I bought
them reconditioned from the factory store with an employee discount.
