KDE & mouse buttons

Recently I setup an old laptop (Mandrake/KDE) in the family room for my
wife to check news/weather/etc and my daughter to play games. Both are
left handed. But when I go to the KDE preferences / peripherals / mouse
section, even though I can see the right-handed/left-handed option it is
disabled. Anybody know why? The machine is a thinkpad and so has the
keyboard nipple thingie and some thumb buttons, but I've also got a
regular two button, non-USB mouse attached. It's a shame to have come
so far and have it be that annoying. Try explaining to a 2 1/2 yr old
that you pick up Bert's bottle caps by using your middle finger? Kinda
awkward. She keeps bringing up the popup menu.
