broadband phones?

Right, It does not require any software to run.  There is some software you
could use, softphone, that allows you to use your computer to use it without
a telephone.

The hardware option is the Cisco VOIP bridge.  Then you plug your POTS
(plain old telephone set, yet it is a real technical term) into the CICSO
box, and make your phone calls.  Some folks at work used it with Road Runner
and DSL.  It works OK, but they have mainly either gone back to regular
phone service or to cell phones only.

At work we use VOIP and it works well, but it is a commercial implementation
over a private network.

Does anyone have any experience with broadband phone providers (such as 
vonage.com)?  People say that they hook up to your computer, which would 
make me think that I'd probably have to run some proprietary Windows 
software in order to use it, but people we've talked to say that you don't 
have to keep your computer on in order to use it, which makes me think 
that it doesn't require any software to run, so I'm all confused.
