complicated x over ssh question

OK, another PEBCAK error [0].  Sorry.
I neglected to mention that my work machine is a Windows XP box (don't 
start!), and I'm using cygwin for X and PuTTY for ssh.  I had to add the X 
forwarding options to PuTTY, then it worked.  I thought I only needed it 
on the server side.
