how do you store a bunch of files?

Hi. I was just thinking about how I backup my stuff and maybe I'm not
doing it in the best way. I'll just encrypt (gnupg) or password protect
what ever seems important and tar it up for storage. I've read you can
password protect tar (what's the command?) but I see so many apps that
say they can crack that I wonder if it's such a good idea. So if you
had less than a gig of mixed files to save once in a while, how would
you do it? Oh, this is not a matter of national security. Just me
playing around. Thanks for any tips.
