While I have not been using VOIP, I've been using Comcast Digital Phone that
uses the Comcast infrastructure in a similar manner to regular phone. Since
I switched to this, my connection and clarity has been very good (much
better than Verizon).

Comcast has a new VOIP offering called "Digital Voice". This is VOIP but
connects to Comcast's infrastructure at the head end so it never goes out
onto the public Internet. 2 of my friends have been using it, and so far
zero problems. The way this works is through the Arris cable modem. The
cable modem has 2 telephone jacks one of which would plug into your local
phone infrastructure. The cable modem has slots for 2 batteries so if you
lose power you won't lose phone or Internet. It is more expensive than
services like Vonage, but it does feature unlimited long distance and local
calling.
