They do, though it's relatively new. It's only included in the 
WhiteRussian RC4 version. That's been stable for me on two WRT54GS's 
(one in client mode, one in AP.) My only problem is I have to reboot the 
client after I reboot the AP, because it doesn't try to re-establish a 
connection. That should be easy to fix with a script, I just haven't 
gotten around to it.

As for your other problems, I have a separate DHCP server set up, so I 
don't use the one on the WRT, so can't comment on your problems there. 
And because all the firmwares use the existing nvram settings, they all 
hold over your changes across flashes.
