removing a Linux Keylogger

I've never encountered this, so I am at a loss. I recently was told that 
I likely have a keylogger installed on my linux box. I was left a note 
in my /root folder from someone else who'd had their machine compromised 
to store the logins/passwords. The question is how do I know if one is 
installed and running, and how do I remove it. This is only temporary 
until I get back to the office and can reload the os.
