You might want to look at GnuCash.  The invoice-creation portion is still a
little...  Weak... but it has a lot of features for a consulting business.

I've got a DI-784 which locked up a lot in some installations until I updated
the firmware.  Are you sure you're running the most recent firmware?  
If not, try upgrading.  Since I've upgraded I've had no problems with 
it that couldn't
be attributed to an upstream failure.
