And for the first salvo...

If you've been using vi for over 20 years like I have, nvi has all the 
obscure vi features that your fingers know instinctively, whereas vim is 
missing all but the most basic vi features. In addition to the annoying 
absence of critical functionality, vim also has additional non-vi features 
that pop up in your face unexpectedly and break your train of thought.

Only a Newbie (in this context, anyone who's used vi for less than 
20 years) would consider vim a vialble alternative!
