OK, I just made the Ugliest Crossover Cable Possible, and verified it 
with my cable tester against:
http://www.makeitsimple.com/how-to/dyi_crossover.htm

Inexplicably, there was no change in the results.  Everything worked as 
it did before.  Truly baffling.

I've put enough time into this that it's promoted to the "I just need it 
done" category.  Anyone willing to come over to Waltham one night and 
straighten it out?   I'm willing to pay a reasonable rate.  I have too 
many balls in the air and simply don't have time for this.  I like 
mysteries, but when the clues contradict each other...

I'm going to reconfigure everything to the old setup (everything through 
the WRT54G) for now.
