Thanks to everyone who answered this question. I spend some time
attempting to get a bargain on eBay, but the bargains weren't cheap
enough to get me excited enough, so I decided that useful was more
important than cheap and bought an on-sale Thinkpad at NewEgg. (There
was also a pretty good Thinkpad deal at staples.com, but NewEgg threw
in a free memory card, so I went with them.)

It came with Windows XP professional, and I have split the drive and
am dual-booting with Ubuntu. The Ubuntu install was really slick
compared to the last time I installed LINUX (over a year ago). It
even sets the hardware clock for you, so you don't have to bother
installing an ntp client on Windows.
