Yup, that sounds right.

My statements apply to the older, simpler concept of parity memory.

So ECC should enhance reliability - at least in theory - in addition to 
making it easier to identify memory faults.

You just have to weight the added cost of ECC vs. the probability of a 
memory fault and how important that is for your application.
