Which distros should I consider ?

Probably a reasonable approach is to "try before you buy". Most of the 
distros have a standalone CD. I mentioned Knoppix, which is a Debian based 
system. You can boot the standalone distros without installing them. You 
get the look and feel and see how they play. 

I do know that one guy who was at the last installfest could not get Ubuntu 
configured to drive his wireless where he was able to install SuSE + 
NDISWRAPPER.
