Dual Boot While Hybernating?

I am trying to hybernate one install of Linux, boot another that has
no swap (so it shouldn't touch the hybernation image in swap), and
then return to the hybernated Linux.

It doesn't work.  The hybernated Linux does not come back, it does a
complete boot.

I mostly run Ubuntu 6.06 on my notebook, recently I installed a
version of 5.10 on a different (LVM) volume.  I told the new install
it has no swap, and I am mounting no volumes in common.  (Checked by
running top and mount.)  I am, however, using the same boot blocks,
and the same /boot partition.  My 5.10 install has a custom 2.6.15
kernel.  Here is its menu.lst entry:

Would this somehow touch something to damage hybernation image?  (What
does the "ro" mean?  I just copied it...)

Other ideas?
