gnu/linux on AMD: 64-bit or 32-bit?

Just one comment is that the Linux kernel has been 64-bit since about 1994
when Linux ported it to the Alpha chip. (Jim Paradis had originally ported
the 32-bit kernel to the Alpha). While 64-bit chips on the desktop are
fairly recent, we have had 64-bit chips in servers for a much longer period
of time.
