NIS question

I just set up the NIS server, and tested it, and on the client, when I log 
in, I get the following message.
id: cannot find name for user ID 502
I only setup the databases for passwd, group and hosts
a 'ypcat passwd' correctly displays the users both on the server as well 
as the client. There is something stupid that I am missing.
