If by headphones you mean attaching them to the on-board sound card, 
then that won't cut it. In order to hear a POST beep code, you need a 
plain old speaker attached directly to the motherboard headers 
specifically for the speaker.

I should have added that if it is an intermittent failure due thermal 
changes (as opposed to something more permanent, like a cracked bond 
wire in an IC), you can sometimes get lucky by leaving the machine 
powered up for several hours, and then try repeatedly restarting it.
