Knoppix and dd limitations

I'd concur that it is a file system limitation, especially given that 2 
GB is the file size limit on some file systems (FAT). The response from 
Mike Ledoux seems like the best explanation - that Samba is imposing the 
limit in case the target file system has that limit. Of course if you're 
exporting an actual FAT file system, that would explain it too.

You should be able to pipe the output from dd through split. Probably 
with a compressor in the middle.

Or you could use Partimage on the SystemRescueCd I previously mentioned. 
It will compress and split image files to a specified size (2 GB by 
default). Just be sure and test the image files it creates.
