"vi" is short for *vile*.

Alas, it is usually the default editor on many distros, and just knowing how 
to exit from it is quite a challenge.

First thing I do on a new installation is install emacs! Then I have to reset 
all them there editor environment variables to use the REAL editor!

eVIl indeed.

One lovely feature Emacs has that I don't think vi(le) does is Registers. I 
can pop a complicated layout into a register and pull it up later, with the 
memory of my position in all the files maintained. 

And so we can get into a nasty "can vi do THIS..." flame!
Actually, I wonder if vi can do anything Emacs can't do -- besides give you a 
headache if you aren't a vi acolyte!
