Is the goal to cover the field, or cross the field?

I would turn to the folks at War Driving World (wardrivingworld.com) and/or
Netgate (netgate.com) for advice.  Both are helpful and informed.  If you
have line-of-sight and don't need high bandwidth, you may get away with some
off the shelf high power (300~400mW) cards and big external antennas.

Sounds interesting.
