The Ubuntu LiveCDs show a nice splash screen while starting up,
without the nasty error messages that would scare a would-be Windows
converter.  Here's a screenshot form the latest LIve CD that looks
like a standard Windows-ish boot splash:

All that is required is the "quiet" argument passed to the kernel for
this to happen...
