Parallel vs Serial speed

I think the real driving force as to why we are going more toward
serial cabling on hard drives is a matter of form factor and cabling.
Today, rackable computers are becoming much smaller and more dense.
Disk drives are now stored in separate cabinets in the same or separate
rack. Much of the serial-<->parallel work is done on the chip. The
real estate on the mother boards for parallel connections is part of
the formula.
