hackable GPS?

The March issue of "Linux Journal" has a full page ad from Garmin, one 
of the leading GPS manufacturers, advertising a couple of jobs. One is 
for a system administrator, and the other is for a Linux software 
engineer, specifically with embedded application experience, and 
mentions GTK+ and Qtopia.

Sounds like they're planning to develop a portable GPS receiver that 
runs Linux.

While you could always attach a GPS receiver with NEMA output to a 
laptop running open source navigation software, having the GPS unit 
itself run Linux opens up some additional possibilities for a hackable 
portable device. It also might mean an end to the proprietary map file 
formats and communication protocols that force customers to buy map 
software from the GPS manufacturers.
