Seems like it might be simpler to use Samba/CIFS[1]. There are fewer 
"moving parts" (fewer daemons if you handle name resolution through 
existing DNS instead of NMB), and the protocol uses fixed ports and 
TCP-only, so easier to firewall.

How it compares to NFS on performance is another matter...
