Shreding History

What's the best way to remove a file and history from a computer so that it
could never possibly be found?

I know I can run 'shred' on my hard drive but I'd like to have things remain
intact.
Also, I need to erase stuff from windows as well as linux. Mounting a drive
from linux or a livecd is not a problem.

Suggestions on what to do are welcome.
