SSH server on Ubuntu 7.04

I recently set up an Ubuntu 7.04 system to replace my older Mandrake 10
system.  However, I can't seem to get remote access via SSH working.  The
new system, like the old, is behind a router for the home network, and port
22 is set to pass-through to this system on the router.  I have the name
mapped via DynDNS, and that seems to be working.  I can ping the system, but
when I try to SSH, it just times out.

Is there something I'm overlooking?  Is there something I can use on the
Ubuntu side to see what's happening to the connection attempt, and why it's
timing out?

Ultimately, I want to use PuTTY to connect to the machine from other sites,
to check e-mail, etc.  I had all this working with the old machine.
