Ok, my 2 cents. I don't dislike MySQL, however I don't think it's the 
end-all-be-all that some folks do. It does have it's place, just as any 
application. For some things it's better, for others it's worse.

For what it's worth, I do believe that any ability to offer choices only 
benefits the end-user, however doing so does add a layer of complexity 
to supporting any system. I can easily see that the folks behind MythTV 
made a choice to limit the complexity by choosing a single distribution.

Lastly, MythTV is an open source project, so it is always possible that 
there will be some future hack to get it to work with other databases, 
although if there were a huge issue with it, it would probably already 
exist.

Look at it this way, at least it doesn't only run on Windows!
