Ubuntu switch user & screen lock

I've been using that feature quite a bit lately (on Fedora7, but since it's
a Gnome thing I'm guessing it's more or less the same thing) and I've never
seen that particular thing happen.

Did you happen to update anything (like X or PAM) between the time your
son's session started and when you tried to to log him back in?  I've seen
really strange things happen when, for example, the X server gets updated
and I've got an active session.  I usually have to logout/login because
things start acting weird, and that always fixes it (ie killing all the
active X sessions finally purges all the old X libraries from memory).
