Even SoftPro was no SoftPro after they moved to Waltham. As far as I
could tell, they stopped having regular events - like talks given by
book authors - after the move.

I never used FatBrain, but if you want to split the difference between
supporting a local book store and the convenience of buying online, you
might want to try BookPool (http://www.bookpool.com/), which is located
on the Cape.

They're exclusively for technical books (like FatBrain was, I believe).
Years ago I used to order from them frequently as they often beat the
prices at Amazon, plus because they're close by, ground shipping would
arrive overnight.

They're less compelling these days. I ordered from them just recently
and it took a while before I found a couple of books on my order list
that were cheaper at BookPool, now that the competition includes the
marketplace sellers at Amazon. BookPool offers free shipping like
Amazon, but with a $40 minimum purchase. And the free shipping option
takes 3 or 4 days. It also seems that they stock less, such that you'll
often have to wait a day or two for the book you want to get in stock
before it can be shipped. These two problems tend to negate the local
advantage.
