Solaris 10 reverting to some default sendmail.cf file

Ok, so I just came across some sort of unusual behavior, and I am likely
doing something wrong. This is a Solaris 10 server, and I was trying to
modifiy the sendmail config to relay. This is what I did:
    o edited /etc/mail/cf/cf/sendmail.mc
    o cd'd into /etc/mail/cf/m4 and generated the sendmail.cf file
    o restarted sendmail.

This all worked fine and everything was forwarding happily for several
weeks.
Well, yesterday I applied the most recent 10_Recommended patches, and
rebooted a couple of times (as the README explained that I needed to
do), and shortly thereafter, mail was no longer relaying. I checked the
sendmail.cf file and it was dated Jan 9 (my sendmail.cf was created on
March 26). The sendmail.mc file was unchanged from my original edits,
and recreating it using the same instructions I had prior from
/etc/mail/cf/README worked.
Q: How do I prevent this from happening again, and WHY is it happening?
Is Solaris using another mc file other than the one I edited?
Thanks in advance,
Grant M.
