I'm talking about the end-user reading the information on the page. The 
same situation applies if the end-user loads a page on your site, then 
does something else for a while, returning to your site after the 5 
minute TTL has expired.

Having a minority of browsers endure a 30 second timeout after every 5 
minutes of browsing may still be an acceptable price to pay for the 
added added uptime.
