We know mbox itself isn't inherently prone to corruption (even if it's a 
bit more probable, given that data gets appended to an existing file), 
so what you're really saying is that you might stop triggering a bug in 
your file system or mail tool by switching to a different mailbox 
format. That may be true, but if it was me, I'd rather find the culprit 
and replace it, than avoid the bug.

It's part of the Dovecot project, also known as "Dovecot LDA" (I wish 
they had avoided the generic "deliver" name, which is used by another, 
much older LDA):

If you're using the Dovecot IMAP server, using the matching LDA will 
keep the indexes updated as messages get delivered. It also provides a 
Sieve plugin:

for filtering. It uses a syntax that isn't nearly as obtuse as procmail, 
and in theory there are mail client extensions available that let you 
modify the server-side filtering rules from the client. (I haven't 
implemented Sieve myself yet, but plan to. I believe there is a 
SquirrelMail (which you mentioned using) plugin available.)
