I found it odd that Ubuntu lacked a more obviously named file to tell 
you the version. Even Debian has the more obvious /etc/debian_version.

I tend to symlink Ubuntu_version to one of the Ubuntu provided files.

On the GUI side of things, surprisingly System->About Ubuntu will *not* 
tell you what your current version is. Which is puzzling, as there are 
several circumstances where a casual user needs to know the version they 
are running.

But there are a few other ways to determine the version fro the GUI. I 
think the Firefox splash page shown after initial installation or 
upgrade (of FF) shows it. The default home page (branded Google search) 
has the version number in the URL. And System -> Administration -> 
Software Sources identifies both the version number and the release 
name...at least if you installed from CD.
