   IIRC, KDE uses DBUS and HAL for detecting hotplugged disks.  Do you have 
   those daemons running?

Yes, I do.  It detects USB hotplug disks just fine.

It looks like something lower level doesn't think my eSATA disk is
hotpluggable.
