My assumption was that /dev/sda is a RAID 1 volume presented by
his hardware RAID controller, and was 2 disks ganged together,
and that /dev/sdb is a RAID5 volume, similarly presented,
probably 3-5 disks ganged together.

I generally think RAID 5 is a poor compromise.
