Assuming that postfix is properly configured (can you send mail
with the command 

echo test | mail -s "test" jdm-LPA1KyJyIuz1P9xLtpHBDw at public.gmane.org

?)

Then here are the relevant bits of mutt config:

set sendmail="/usr/bin/sendmail -oi -oem"
