Parts of that which are generally required by any Linux system
with audio:

	OSS or ALSA, not necessarily both.

Parts of that which are generally required by a random Linux
desktop to play well in a GNOME or KDE environment:

	OSS or ALSA
	GStreamer
	Phonon and/or ARTS (KDE)

Parts of that which no sane person would (or has, AFAICT)
touched:

	JACK
	PulseAudio
	OpenAL

All IMHO.
